It’s been a wild first half of the 2024 MLB season for the New York Mets. Between the dismal start, Jorge López’s glove throwing incident and post-game comments, and the recent lucky charm named Grimace, it’s been eventful.

The latest phenomenon in the Mets world is infielder José Iglesias, who performed under his pseudonym Candelita during a concert following his team’s 7-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night.

32,465 fans at Citi Field first celebrated the Mets’ 12th win in the last 14 games and then saw the veteran infielder, who signed a minor league contract with the team in December, perform his hit “OMG” in uniform.

It wasn’t just the Mets fans in attendance who enjoyed the show. Iglesias’ teammates – as well as Mr. and Mrs. Met – stood on the first-base side of the field to cheer him on before joining him in the infield.

“It was a special moment,” said Iglesias, who noted that he wouldn’t have done as well if the Mets had lost. “It (shows) how close we are. … We live by it and enjoy it. One day at a time. That’s what we have to do now.”

“This group has become a family. It’s great. We have great people here. We get along well, take care of each other and play good baseball.”

Iglesias has used “OMG” as his walkup song since joining the Mets from Triple-A Syracuse on May 31. The team has a 17-6 record since his call-up and is now just one game away from one of the NL Wild Card spots.

The release of “OMG” on streaming platforms was planned for July, but was brought forward by a week.

“It’s hard to express what I’m feeling right now,” Iglesias said. “There are a lot of emotions involved. It was a great game. The guys did it again. It’s a dream come true. I’m very humbled. … I’m floating right now.”
