Chris Martin is known as the frontman of Coldplay – one of the biggest British rock bands in the world, who are currently set to make their record-breaking fifth headlining appearance at Glastonbury 2024.
Coldplay, the so-called “house band of Glastonbury”, made their debut in the New Bands Tent in 1999 before moving on to the Other Stage the following year. This was followed by a performance at the Pilton Fete in 2001, which impressed founder Michael Eavis so much that he invited them back to headline in 2002.
Coldplay have since headlined in 2005, 2011 and 2016 and return this year as the most successful band of the 21st century to headline on Saturday night.

The British indie rock band have sold over 100 million albums, won over 300 awards and had their songs streamed a total of nine billion times, and their enormous success shows no signs of slowing down.
The group is currently on their grueling “Music of the Spheres” tour, already the third most successful of all time, and has played to more than 7.6 million people from Costa Rica to Singapore.
Chris Martin is the band’s main songwriter and undoubtedly their publicity magnet – he regularly makes headlines mainly because of his relationships with his Oscar-winning ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow (51) and his current Hollywood girlfriend Dakota Johnson (34).
The 47-year-old, who has children Apple (19) and Moses (17) with Goop founder Gwyneth, was first spotted with Dakota in 2017, a year after the musician’s divorce.
The couple are reportedly engaged – the Fifty Shades of Grey star was spotted wearing an emerald ring on her ring finger on her 34th birthday in Los Angeles last October – but have not publicly announced their engagement and are keeping their relationship under wraps.
A source told The Mirror earlier this year: “The couple got engaged some time ago and kept the news under wraps. But now they are speaking openly about it with those around them. They have been infatuated with each other since day one, so this next step was inevitable. They are in no rush to plan the wedding, but are simply enjoying making their engagement official.”
Chris and Dakota, the daughter of Miami Vice star Don Johnson, reportedly met through mutual friends and now live together in Chris’ $12.5 million Malibu home. Chris co-fathers his two children and Dakota has previously referred to his son Moses as her “stepson.”
Chris and Gwneth, the mother of his children, married in 2003 before announcing their “conscious separation” in a post on the website Goop in 2014.
In their statement at the time, they wrote that they were “parents first and foremost” and that they are still very close friends even years later.
The couple reportedly met for the first time backstage at a Coldplay concert in October 2002, just three weeks after the Oscar-winning actress lost her father Bruce Paltrow. Chris wrote his famous song “Fix You” for Gwyneth after her father’s death.
The couple married a year later in a secret ceremony in Santa Barbara, California, without family members present, People magazine reported. Their daughter Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born in 2004, followed by their son Moses in 2006.
After the couple’s divorce became final in 2016, Gwyneth married television writer and producer Brad Falchuk in 2018, whom she reportedly met on the set of “Glee.”
According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2023, Chris had a net worth of £160 million.
Coldplay’s first album, Parachutes, was released in 2000, before Chris’s relationship with Gwyneth came into the spotlight. The debut was a Mercury-nominated hit and sold five million copies.
However, the band’s history dates back to 1996, when the band, which also includes Guy Berryman, Will Champion, Jonny Buckland and manager Phil Harvey, met while studying at University College London. The group was originally called Starfish, but later adopted the name Coldplay from another student band that had rejected the name.
Chris, who was born in Devon and brought up by his parents, a chartered accountant and a music teacher, and his four siblings, knew Phil from school, where they met and became best friends at the age of 13. The pair both played in a Blues Brothers-style band called The Rockin’ Honkies while attending Sherborne boarding school in Dorset.
During the 1990s, Coldplay played smaller shows and didn’t attract much attention. However, they were discovered by radio DJ Steve Lamacq and invited onto his show, becoming the first independent band to appear on BBC Radio 1’s Evening Session in 1998.
The following year, Coldplay made their Glastonbury debut, playing in the New Bands Tent thanks to the fan base of then 19-year-old festival co-organizer Emily Eavis.
Their first few songs didn’t chart well, but that soon changed when they signed with record label Parlophone in 2000 and released their debut album Parachutes, which received instant radio play due to the now iconic pop-rock anthem Yellow.
In 2002, they released A Rush of Blood to the Head, which was their breakthrough hit, selling 17 million copies worldwide. Since then, Coldplay have managed to maintain their popularity by winning more Brit Awards than any other band, winning seven Grammys, nine Brit Awards and 15 MTV Awards.
