Artyom Levshunov of Michigan State Hockey is selected as number 2 in the NHL Draft

Michigan State Hockey’s success in 2024 was reflected in the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday, when Spartan defenseman ArytoM Levshunov was selected No. 2 by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Levshunov was only the second Spartan ever selected No. 2, following Craig Simpson, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1985. The following year, Michigan State legend Joe Murphy went No. 1 to the Detroit Red Wings.

Levshunov was a freshman last season. He had a fantastic season and was named All-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He was also selected to the All-Big Ten First Team.

The 18-year-old defenseman was also named a top 10 finalist for the Tim Taylor National Rookie of the Year Award. He scored 35 points – 26 assists and nine goals – in 40 games last season.

Levshunov’s total score was the second best among rookie defenders in the country. He ranked 11th among all rookie defenders in the country.

“We are proud of Arty and how hard he has worked for this moment,” Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale said, according to Michigan State Athletics. “For a young hockey player to experience what he experienced tonight is a dream come true. We are incredibly grateful for what he has done for our program over the last year and look forward to watching his continued development.”

The 2024 NHL Draft will take place at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Today is day 2 of the draft, which includes rounds 2 to 7.
