Considered one of the NFL’s “best and most consistent style stars,” it’s no surprise that football player Tyrod Taylor had a front row seat at the recent Men’s Fashion Week shows in Paris.
With his appearance in the Netflix series Quarterbacks and his philanthropic initiatives through the Tyrod Taylor Foundation, the sportsman’s schedule is certainly full – but in the name of fashion, you can always find a way to get to the fashion capital mid-season to show off some style. For Taylor, the prized starting quarterback (who most recently signed with the New York Jets for the upcoming NFL season) and Super Bowl champion, it was time to land in Paris to show off and show off – further cementing the presence of sports stars destined to become fashion greats in their own right. After the fashion hype VMAN We caught up with Taylor for a quick look back at his experiences of the week, some of his favorite trends and how he feels about athletes taking their place on the global fashion stage.

VMAN: How was your experience during Paris Fashion Week?
Tyrod Taylor: Technically, this is my vacation between football seasons, and I decided to spend it here since Paris Fashion Week inspires me. I was at PFW last year to launch my own luxury clothing line DIALLO, which kept me very busy, so this season I was able to spend more time supporting the brands I love and being inspired by their creativity. A highlight for me was (experiencing) my first Louis Vuitton show with Pharrell Williams as creative director. This had special meaning for me since we both grew up in the same part of Virginia and I’ve followed his creative career path for years. I was impressed by how meticulously he incorporated his unique message of unity into both the actual garments in the collection and the presentation. A true artist of our time. I’m taking notes and learning for my own brand.
VMAN: What were some of your favorite trends that you saw both on the runway and on the street?
T: What I love about PFW is that you get such a mix of menswear from all over the world, and I’m a fan of everything. From Bianca Saunders to Louis Vuitton to Kenzo to Amiri, it’s top-notch menswear. I went to the surprise show for ASAP Rocky’s “American Sabotage” collection for AWGE. I thought it was interesting how he used fashion as a vehicle for social commentary, but also how the collection encapsulated a trend in how kids dress in American cities.—They create their own clothes and style by mixing fabrics and creating their own pieces. Despite this, I still love dressing up in a suit from Bottega (Veneta). All of the clothes this season seemed very wearable, so much so that I had to buy two new Rimowa suitcases to take everything home.
VMAN: What do you think about the fact that more and more athletes are gaining a foothold in the fashion scene?

T: Athletes have always been present in the fashion industry, but not as visible. I think you see more athletes now because the fashion industry is seeing the opportunity to see athletes as a powerful tool to reach their customers. And that makes sense because athletes embody a similar strength and power that fashion is meant to convey. If fashion is a reflection of our self-identity, then clothing is our personal uniform of self-expression. It doesn’t hurt that athletes are in top shape, so we wear clothes that fit well. Plus, many athletes are the top customers in VIC, so luxury brands are taking notice.
VMAN: Why do you think the worlds of fashion and sport fit together so well?
T: Of course, there are natural staging moments for fashion like the tunnel walk or cuts to fans and VIPs at the game all dressed up to support their teams or players, but that’s just the start of many similarities. Each sport has its own style, culture and fanbase and I can imagine that’s exciting for fashion. There’s also competition within sport and fashion as each brand stands on its own while being in a very competitive industry overall. Plus, in real time, fashion has the physicality and performance in common with sport. I think some of the shows I attended this week felt as big as a Super Bowl game.
