The Kennedys are the most famous cannabis gardeners

The White House Rose Garden is nationally famous, but apparently the Kennedy House had another special garden!

The Kennedys are a famous political family that fascinates some. His time in office was called Camelot and inspired utopian ideals and high hopes. King Arthur and his knights were considered pure-hearted, chivalrous and infinitely brave. Likewise, the Kennedy administration is sometimes remembered as a time of optimism, growing opportunities and humanitarian goals. JFK’s wife Jackie was considered a symbol of beauty, grace and good taste. One of their legacies was the White House Rose Garden. But it seems that another legacy is that the Kennedys are the most famous weed gardeners.

JFK was considered a young, viral president, but in reality he was suffering from chronic pain from his injuries from World War II. Then he met Max Jacobson, who later became known as “Dr. Feelgood.” From then on, marijuana, still illegal at the time, helped him treat his back injuries and manage his mobility difficulties. The war on drugs was still in the future, but finding good cannabis was still a challenge.

The White House Rose Garden

Kathy McKeon, the first lady’s former assistant from 1964 to 1977, wrote a book and included a section about the secret garden at Kennedy’s estate during his presidency. The book is the coming-of-age memoir of a young woman who was Jackie Kennedy’s personal assistant and occasional nanny for thirteen years – and the lessons about life and love she learned from the glamorous first lady. She was a fan of the Kennedys and they helped shape her life.

While on the property, she became curious about a particular, unremarkable flowerbed. She investigated it and “that’s when it hit me.” She sought out Jack Dempsey, the retired Cape Cod police chief who often hung out at the Secret Service trailer. McKeon told Dempsey what he suspected. The two hiked back to the secret garden and there the former police chief confirmed the suspicion: marijuana.

McKeon shared with Jackie Kennedy. A surprised Jackie allowed the Secret Service agents to pull the plants from the secret garden.

Cannabis has been used to treat all kinds of medical problems for over a millennium. JFK was fortunate in some ways that treatment options have only become accessible to many citizens in the last 10 years.
