Iran threatens “devastating war” if Israel attacks Lebanon

Iran will start a war to destroy Israel if it launches a major attack on Lebanon, the Islamic Republic’s UN mission said in a post late Friday. “Although Iran considers the Zionist regime’s propaganda about attacking Lebanon as psychological warfare, it will be a devastating war if it leads to full-scale military aggression,” the post said. “All options, including the full participation of all resistance fronts, are on the table.”

The question of whether Israel would opt for a military operation to expel Hezbollah from its northern border was the subject of a heated debate in the Cabinet on Thursday. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who was concluding his official visit to Washington, said Israel was open to a diplomatic solution that would return security to the region and allow the tens of thousands of Israelis who were evacuated to the south immediately after the October 7 Hamas massacre out of fear of a similar attack by the Iranian-backed Lebanese terror group to return to their homes.

“I told the Americans that we are not the ones who want a war in the north and that it would be acceptable if we reached an agreement to remove Hezbollah from the border,” Gallant said at the meeting. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir disagreed with this position. “Have we not learned from the 20 years of agreements? With an agreement, within two years our women would be raped and our children murdered,” he said.

According to a report by Politico on Thursday, US intelligence agencies believe that a full-scale conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could erupt in the coming weeks if a ceasefire agreement with Hamas is not reached. According to the report, the Biden administration has tried to persuade both sides to reduce tensions. However, US officials remain doubtful that the potential ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas will materialize.

Both Israeli and Hezbollah officials have already drawn up battle plans and are working to acquire additional weapons, according to American sources. Another senior official warned Politico: “The risk is higher now than at any other time in recent weeks.” In Europe, several countries advised their citizens to leave Lebanon for fear of war, and Canada plans to evacuate thousands of its citizens from Lebanon.
