Experience the famous old Hollywood glamour at the Oklahoma Museum

Oklahoma is no stranger to Hollywood! Many movies and television shows have been filmed in the Sooner State. Even a handful of famous actors have called Oklahoma home. But in a new exhibit at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, some of that old Hollywood glamour will also find its way to Oklahoma.

Starting June 22, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art will open its exhibition Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer. The exhibition will be on display at the museum until September 29.

Who was Edith Head?

Head, an award-winning costume designer, designed and dressed some of Hollywood’s biggest stars from the 1930s to the 1960s. According to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art website, the retrospective will feature “70 costumes that capture the peak of Head’s career and were worn by such stars as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Shirley MacLaine, Veronica Lake, Barbara Stanwyck and Kim Novak.”

From the 1920s to the early 1980s, Head headed the costume departments at Paramount and Universal Studios. She worked on over 400 films, received 35 Oscar nominations and won eight Oscars. Head was one of those who helped shape the classic Hollywood style with her striking designs.

Museum visitors may recognize Head’s work from films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Rear Window. Pixar’s Edna Mode from The Incredibles was also modeled after Head.

What will the Edith Head exhibition show?

Museum visitors will have plenty to explore in the Head exhibition. The retrospective will take up the entire third floor of the museum and will include costumes, sketches and two demonstration areas showcasing Head’s life and work. Costume styles on display include “formal dresses, costumes for musical performances, everyday wear and period costumes.”

The museum’s Noble Theater will complement the exhibition by showing a film series showcasing Head’s work on screen. The film series is scheduled to begin June 29 and run through September 28. Films in the series include Rear Window, Vertigo, Blue Hawaii, Samson and Delilah, The Sting, The Little Mermaid and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
