Michigan reacts to the presidential debate

LANSING, Michigan (WLNS) – Some Democrats are nervous after President Biden’s performance at Thursday night’s debate, and there is talk of replacing him with another candidate in the election.

Democrats say they wanted strength from President Biden, but Biden seemed to struggle with his speech, his voice seemed scratchy and some words were slurred. After this performance, even members of his own party fear that – at his age – he may not be up to the task of leading the country for another term.

6 News spoke to one of the country’s leading Democrats, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenowwho attributed his “slow start” to a sore throat.

She says Biden should not be replaced because Michigan needs his policies.

“I think what he talked about resonates with the people of Michigan: lower prescription drug costs, more jobs, making sure we address the climate crisis that’s hitting us full force in the form of all these severe weather events,” Stabenow said. “It’s very, very serious and it’s not going to get better unless we have a clean energy strategy – he gets up every day and takes care of Michigan, and unfortunately the other guy takes care of himself.”

However, Republicans were critical of Biden’s performance.

Pete HoekstraChairman of the Michigan Republican Party, issued a statement to our media partner WXYZ:

President Biden offered no excuse for what is happening to people every day: the inflation, what is happening at the border, the disaster we are in abroad.

Statement by Chairman Hoekstra to WXYZ, June 28, 2023

Polls in Michigan and nationally have shown the two candidates running close together. This is the first of two scheduled debates before the November election.

The next debate will take place on Tuesday 10 September at 9pm and will be moderated by ABC.
