WestJet aircraft mechanics go on strike

WestJet aircraft mechanics go on strike

Just one day after their contract dispute was submitted to binding arbitration, WestJet aircraft mechanics have walked off the job.

The airline said the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association began strike action at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday.

“The government has formally stepped in to offer binding arbitration and ensure we reach a resolution,” Diederik Pen, president of WestJet Airlines, said in a statement.

“The only reason for this union to continue the strike is to cause damage, disrupt the travel plans of thousands of Canadians over the July long weekend and impose significant costs on our company.

“Since arbitration has been ordered, a strike has no impact on the outcome of the arbitration. It is therefore pure retaliation by a disappointed union.”

WestJet warned that severe travel disruptions could be expected if the strike was not ended immediately.

The airline added that it is “actively and aggressively pursuing all options to minimize disruption,” including calling on the federal labour minister and the Canada Industrial Relations Board to intervene.

On Thursday, Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan instructed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to support the airline and the union with efforts to reach a first contract.

WestJet assured its customers that there would be no strikes or lockouts as a result of this measure.
