Brother and sister from Johnson City sentenced in 2019 death of their mother | WJHL

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) – A brother and sister from Johnson City have been convicted of murder in connection with the 2019 death of their mother.

A jury found Michael and Karen Murray guilty of first-degree murder on Friday.

A Washington County grand jury indicted the siblings after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation investigated the death of their disabled mother, Sheila June Murray, who died in the hospital.

According to the TBI, the investigation revealed that Michael and Karen Murray were responsible for the abuse and neglect that led to their mother’s death.

“I’m very disappointed with the verdict,” Chris Boyd, Karen Murray’s attorney, told News Channel 11. “I thought it was obvious that this was a poor family that was overwhelmed with caring for an elderly parent whose problems they couldn’t handle. I don’t think this was willful neglect, but the jury disagreed and their verdict is what we should respect.”

On Tuesday, a paramedic testified to the condition Sheila June Murray was found in when emergency services came to her home in 2019. Emergency services found her with an open ankle fracture lying in a bed that was wet with urine and had feces on it.

The verdict is scheduled for September 30.
