OKC woman finds life and love through her training at Healthy Living OKC

Robin Obert-McMahon has always been fitness conscious and even competed in triathlons until things didn’t feel that way anymore.

“I called my friend who is a doctor and told him something was wrong,” Obert-McMahon said.

She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and the situation was quite serious.

“They took me to the emergency room and my blood sugar was almost 900, so I shouldn’t have been conscious at that point,” Obert-McMahon said.

Over time, her health problems would continue to be a problem.

“My doctor called and said she had met with all my specialists and I wasn’t going to make it,” Obert-McMahon said.

“I stayed up all night planning my funeral (…) I just said: God, it is your will,” said Obert-McMahon. She had made her peace with the news.

A visit to the doctor should change everything.

“She (the doctor) looked at her assistant and said she used to be a triathlete,” Obert-McMahon said. “That really hit home in my head and I said, I’m still a triathlete here.”

After overcoming her health issues, Robin went against her doctor’s advice and came here to Healthy Living OKC to start exercising again, little did she know how much this decision would change her life.

“People thought I was crazy. At church they said I couldn’t do it, and I said, ‘Watch me,'” Obert-McMahon said.

She started training with her trainer, Megan Burch. As she got better, another trainer caught her eye.

“I thought he was nice (…), after meeting him a few times, I thought he was really nice,” Obert-McMahon said.

The trainer who caught her eye was Mike McMahon, but he remained cool over the next few weeks.

“Well, Mike was curious about her; he came to me and asked about her,” Burch said.

“You know she’s a professional chef? I said tell me more,” Mike said.

It only took one date for Mike to finally get close to me. “She won my heart immediately because she was so nice,” Mike said.

He began to train Robin and prepare her for another competition. The stronger she became, the stronger Mike’s feelings became.

“This is the one, this is the woman you have to spend the rest of your life with,” Mike said.

So he proposed to her on Thanksgiving and the two married in May 2024.

“Yeah, she’s pretty amazing,” Mike said.

With Mike’s training, Robin competed in an aqua marathon in September. To her disappointment, she came in second, but she was left with pneumonia and a torn rotator cuff. She expects to be cleared by her doctors next week to resume full training and preparation for her next triathlon.
