“The Tyler Perry Story” shows how the famous filmmaker overcame abuse and resistance from the industry

Tyler Perry is ready to show fans who he is in a new documentary.

On Tuesday, Prime Video released the trailer for “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,” which sheds light on the 54-year-old’s childhood and her path to becoming one of the most successful filmmakers of this generation.

The film’s synopsis states that the “entertainment giant”, who topped the domestic box office charts for four years in a row in 2010, was once just “a man humbly working to heal his childhood trauma by turning his pain into a promise”.

The Emmy winner has previously opened up about his difficult childhood. In an Instagram post on October 6, he shared a clip from a 2018 interview in which he discussed how he was once “devastated, broke, hungry and homeless.”

The documentary’s trailer reveals that the film will explore how Perry, originally born Emmitt Perry Jr., changed his name as a result of his difficult relationship with his father and his abusive childhood. The project also focuses on the 2009 death of his mother, Willie Maxine Perry, whose health was deteriorating as he experienced massive career success.

The Madea creator’s innovation in the industry is another key aspect of the film. As the trailer shows, it highlights how the artist spoke to a community of viewers that had been neglected.

Among the stars who paid tribute to the Hollywood heavyweight were Oprah Winfrey, who stressed that his success should not be belittled, and Gayle King, who said: “The talent and power of Tyler Perry was undeniable.”

According to a press release from Amazon Studios, the documentary delves into “the inner world of a man whose story has never been fully told as he becomes a father and media mogul with a mission to pave his own path to the top.”

Armani Ortiz, who assisted Perry on several projects, directed the film alongside Gelila Bekele.

“The product is a profound lesson in how to remember where you came from in order to know where you want to go,” the press release states.
