If there is one show this year that we can safely call a pop culture phenomenon, it is “Baby Reindeer”.

The hit Netflix show quickly made the rounds after its release in April, topping the British streamer’s TV rankings for nearly a month.

One reason the series is so talked about is that it is based on creator and star Richard Gadd’s real-life experiences with a stalker (played by Jessica Gunning) whose life was turned upside down by a seemingly harmless act of kindness.

In a new behind-the-scenes interview with Netflix, Richard and his co-stars Jessica and Nava Mau reflected on how surprising the fan reaction was.

“I thought it would probably be a cult success with critics, it would probably stay on the platform as some kind of artistic gem,” Richard said. “It’s just crazy that it’s resonating with so many people.”

The author and comedian went on to say how unexpected the reactions of some prominent fans in particular had been.

“I grew up with a love of wrestling and the WWE and never really let it go, no matter how hard I tried,” he said.

Richard then revealed that he had always been a “huge” fan of John Cena and one day received a video from the wrestling star and actor in which he said he was a fan of the show.

“Sometimes you just can’t believe it’s happening. Like you wake up one day and think, ‘Oh, it was a dream.'”

He also said that when Stephen King showed his support for the series, it felt like the legendary US author was “playing a prank”.

The author, known for books such as “Misery” and “It,” published an essay in the Times in which he described “Baby Reindeer” as “one of the best things I have ever seen.”

However, as the series’ popularity grew, viewers’ interest in the true identities of the series’ characters also grew.

Although Richard and his co-stars have repeatedly urged viewers not to speculate, there have since been doubts about whether enough has been done to protect the true identities of the people portrayed in the series.

Earlier this month, the woman who claims she is the inspiration for the character “Martha” filed a lawsuit against Netflix, accusing the company of “defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence” and “violation of (her) right to privacy.”

Netflix has vowed to “vigorously defend” the matter and stressed that it also supports “Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”
