DC finally releases the replacement for the best Batman show I’ve wanted in 16 years

About 16 years after I first Batman: The Animated Series and hoped that it would continue like this forever, Batman: The Masked Crusader promises to be an exciting modern replacement for my absolute favorite DC series. Like many people, I watched a fair amount of classic cartoons growing up – a path that would inevitably lead to perhaps the best Batman cartoon series of all time.

More than a decade later, and the Batman: The Masked Crusader Trailer has the upcoming 2024 show as a promising new version of Batman: The Animated Series – complete with the original head producer of the 90s show, Bruce Timm. While these are certainly big shoes to fill, Crusader with cape seems tailor-made to meet the comparisons and the associated expectations.

Batman: The Masked Crusader obviously has a big Batman: The Animated Series Context that Bruce Timm is involved with the project, but the parallels already go far beyond that. Not only are some of the striking stylizations of the previous show clearly recognizable in the art Crusader with capebut the tone – that of a dark series that still follows the rules before becoming completely bloody and adult – also seems to match that of its predecessor.

As someone who comes back regularly Batman: The Animated Series and whose only complaint is that there aren’t more episodes, this is essentially a perfect storm for me and no doubt for many others with fond old and new memories of watching the series. While Crusader with cape seems to be a little more intense in some respects than Batman: The Animated Series – since writer Ed Brubaker has hinted that it would be a more brutal and noir-like series – this is probably only a plus point for the series to a certain extent.

The makers involved The cartoon have spoken at length about the complications that the series’ more intensive censorship has caused in several places with problems in the story, so less restrictions in this regard should prevent this problem from recurring. Therefore, not only Batman: The Masked Crusader looks like a modern version of Batman: The Animated Seriesit also looks like it will explore what the previous show could have been, a concept that just excites me.

Caped Crusader is already prepared to reflect the strongest aspects of Batman: The Animated Series

Batman: The Animated Series was one of the first meaningful ways I immersed myself in the Batman story, as I was closer to Robin’s age than Batman’s when I first saw an episode. However, it’s still just as good, even after years of reading and watching the Dark Knight’s exploits. As such, I am eternally impressed with the show, as It’s a really excellent way for audiences to learn a lot about the hero and the many characters that surround him when they first dive into the franchise, and it’s just as captivating for diehard fans too.

Therefore, it is promising that Batman: The Masked Crusader seems to follow suit. While the main story focuses on the classic tale of the Dark Knight facing the villains of Gotham while people question his motives and effectiveness – thus telling a story as old as time – Crusader with cape also gets obscure enough to include underrated villains like Onomatopoeia, which shows its universal appeal. Balancing that with a stellar art style and a fresh look at Batman’s rogues gallery is a difficult task, but one that the show seems to pull off based on its stylish trailer.

One of the aspects of the upcoming Batman show that seems to have garnered the most interest is how it has obviously already been changed and adapted Batman: The Masked Crusader in a way that often differs noticeably from their conventional representations. This has many similarities with Batman: The Animated Serieswhose changes to the likes of Mister Freeze were fundamental and helped to open up new ways the character could be interpreted from then on.

Crusader with capeHarley Quinn is perhaps the best example of this – she is shown in a completely different costume and with seemingly different motivations that seem completely disconnected from her usual backstory with the Joker, placing her as a psychiatrist for Gotham’s elite. Likewise, Two-Face’s design looks different, and Catwoman’s description places her as “carefree and spoiled heiress whose family lost their fortune after her father was imprisoned for embezzlement“. All this serves to show that Batman: The Masked Crusader will not rest on its laurels, but will revitalize the mythos and cast, even as it explores a familiar world.
