To paraphrase a long-standing slogan for the network, “It’s not Max. It’s HBO.” Casey Bloys, content CEO of HBO and Max, is changing the line between an “HBO show” and a “Max show” by moving most of Max’s upcoming high-budget Warner Bros. IP projects under the HBO umbrella.

This means the upcoming “Harry Potter” television series, as well as the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry” and others, will now all be branded as HBO Originals. This is a departure from the recent decision to put all series based on Warner Bros. IP in the Max bucket, which was first introduced when Bloys took over oversight of Max in 2020. The change officially takes effect with series launching in 2025. This means “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy,” both of which premiere later this year, are expected to continue to be branded as Max Originals.

These shows have already been sold overseas under the Max label – and even last week HBO sent out a “Penguin” teaser that still included the Max branding.
