IDF attack in Shejaiya, killing Hamas terrorists hiding in UNRWA school

Israeli forces began operations in the Shejaia region in the north of the Gaza Strip, killing dozens of terrorists hiding in schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the military said Friday morning.

Israeli forces began a renewed invasion of Shejaia in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday after taking operational control there in January.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, intelligence indicated the presence of terrorists and terrorist infrastructure in the area, operating both above and underground. The troops began their activities during the day and carried out targeted raids at night.

The armed forces discovered dozens of terrorists hiding in UNRWA schools and destroyed these facilities as well as other Hamas terrorist infrastructure.

The Israeli Air Force also attacked a terrorist operating in the Deir al Balah area. The terrorists were operating from a humanitarian area.

The Israeli military stressed that Hamas was using the site as a shield for its activities and was trying not to harm civilians.

“Before the attack, various steps were taken to reduce the harm to innocent civilians, including evacuating the civilian population around the building from which the terrorist was operating, conducting aerial surveillance and using precise munitions, among other measures,” the Israel Defense Forces said.

On Thursday, IDF Arab spokesman Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee addressed residents of Shejaia and called on them to evacuate. He said: “To all residents and civilians in the Shejaia area and the new neighborhoods: For your safety, you must immediately evacuate south toward Salah ad-Din Street to the humanitarian zone.”
