The San Francisco Giants announced Wednesday the patch they will wear on their jerseys to honor legendary outfielder and Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays following his death.

In memory of “Say Hey Kid,” the patches will feature Mays’ last name and his iconic jersey number, 24:

The Giants announced Tuesday that Mays died peacefully at the age of 93:

Widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Mays spent 21 of his 23 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Giants.

In addition to his time with the Giants, Mays spent parts of two seasons as a member of the New York Mets and one year with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League.

Over the course of 3,005 regular season games and 33 postseason games, Mays was a 24-time All-Star, a 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, a two-time National League MVP, a one-time batting champion, a one-time World Series champion, and the 1951 NL Rookie of the Year.

Mays was also a career hitter with a .301 batting average, 660 home runs, 1,909 RBI, 3,293 hits, 2,068 runs scored and 339 stolen bases.

He ranks sixth on MLB’s all-time list for most home runs, seventh in runs scored, 12th in runs scored, and 13th in hits. His speed on the basepaths and defensive strength in center field, in addition to his excellent hitting performance, make him arguably the most complete player in baseball history.

Mays was originally scheduled to attend a game between the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama this Thursday, but he announced on Monday that he would not be able to attend.

Since Mays was a Giants legend and played his first major professional season for the Black Barons at Rickwood Field, there were plans to honor Mays at the game.

While May’s historic career is still being celebrated on Thursday, his life is also being celebrated posthumously.
