Both in the duke And Cobra Commander miniseries (both written by Williamson), each of the characters is inspired by the Transformers. In Duke’s case, the villain Starscream killed one of Duke’s best friends, and Duke is determined to find out more about the Transformers, which he believes are just weapons built on Earth (which leads him to the biggest weapons manufacturer around, Destro). Cobra Commander, meanwhile, discovers Energon, the amazing fuel source that he uses to make a deal with Destro and create the terrorist organization Cobra.

At the end of Duke’s series, he learns of more Transformers when General Hawk tasks Duke with forming a special team that could potentially fight such powerful forces as giant robots that can transform into planes and trucks. However, they also have to deal with Cobra, and that sets the stage for the new series, which also introduces NEW characters as well as new takes on classic characters.
