For the sixth year in a row, the hills surrounding the Virginia War Memorial in downtown Richmond will be bathed in red, white and blue.

More than 12,000 American flags for the Hill of Heroes Celebration will fly starting today and remain hanging through July 12.

The flags honor nearly 12,000 Virginia men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service from World War II to the present. Their names are engraved in the Shrines of Memory, according to a press release from the Virginia War Memorial.

Volunteers from community and service organizations, local businesses and other patriotic men, women and children are needed to help raise the flags starting at 8 a.m.
