Florida State baseball is in the semifinals of the College World Series for the first time in 12 years.

The No. 8 seed Seminoles (49-16) face No. 1 seed Tennessee (57-12) in the semifinals, five days after the two schools met in the opening game of the World Series. The Volunteers came back from an 11-8 deficit in the ninth inning to win 12-11.

The loss means FSU must beat Tennessee twice to advance to the National Championship Series this weekend. The Seminoles beat Virginia (46-17) and No. 4 North Carolina (48-16), scoring a total of 16 runs and going through both games without being eliminated.

Seminoles head coach Link Jarrett knows how difficult it is to beat Tennessee, and after the controversial loss to the Volunteers in the opening game, he said his team is ready.

“So excited. I know how difficult it is to beat this team,” Jarrett said. “You need everything you have. You have to finish. You have to defend. You have to make the shots. And you have to be versatile and be able to compete offensively to find a way to do that.”

“They’re really good. There’s no wiggle room in the lineup. They have a lot of different pitchers. They’re talented. They’ve been here before. They’ve played in this stadium many times.”

The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

Tennessee followed up its win over the Seminoles with a 6-1 victory over North Carolina to send the Tar Heels to the losers bracket, where the team ultimately lost 9-5 to FSU on Tuesday.

Zander Sechrist (4-1) will start for the Volunteers. The senior has had a strong run in the postseason for Tennessee, recording 14 strikeouts in his last three playoff appearances, with his team holding a 3-0 record in those games.

This season, Sechrist has an ERA of 3.26 and has allowed 65 hits and 28 runs.

Jarrett declined to announce a starter after the win against North Carolina, saying the pitching staff was ready for the game.

“So they’re ready. We’ll figure out the pitching. If anyone wants to ask me who’s starting, just save it because I don’t know. We’ll figure it out,” Jarrett said.
