Lupita Nyong’o once wrote to Taylor Swift and asked her to use her song “Shake It Off” in the 2019 film. Little monsters.
Appearing on First We Feast’s “Hot Ones,” Nyong’o recalled how the film’s producers told her they couldn’t get the rights to the 2014 hit, and she decided to take matters into her own hands – because “Shake It Off” helped her get out of a dark period at the time.
“I decided, ‘Okay. I’m going to go ahead and make an offer, I’m going to let Taylor know what this song means to me,’ and I told her the story of how it got me out of a near depression, and before I knew it, everything was sorted,” Nyong’o said (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The story went like this: “When I arrived in London war of starsI had a lot of self-doubt because it was the second thing I’d done,” Nyong’o said. “I got a little bit depressed. My best friend came to London and Taylor had just released ‘Shake It Off.’ And he played it to me to put me in a better mood and we just jumped on my bed and danced and danced and it lifted my mood.”
The Us The actress added: “I haven’t seen her since to thank her for that” (via People).
It’s no secret that Nyong’o is a staunch Swiftie: Before joining the Eras tour last summer, the star shared a TikTok of herself and some friends making friendship bracelets to wear on a night out, an activity they engaged in for hours.
