Lupita Nyong’o has asked Taylor Swift for song rights for “Little Monsters”

Lupita Nyong’o could not shake the feeling that Taylor SwiftThe music of – especially “Shake It Off” – was part of her 2019 film Little monsters.

“When I read the script for Little monsters (and saw) that song and what it meant to Miss Caroline and the kindergarteners, (was there, it) meant a lot to me that I would play it on the ukulele and everything,” Nyong’o, 41, recalled on the Thursday, June 27 episode of First We Feast’s YouTube series “Hot Ones.”

However Little monsters The crew was unable to obtain permission to use Swift’s track.

“When they told me, ‘No, we can’t get the rights,’ I decided, ‘OK. I’ll go and make my pitch,'” she told the moderator Sean Evans“(I thought) I’m going to let Taylor know what this song means to me, and I told her the story of how it got me out of a near depression, and the next thing I know, she was gone. I haven’t seen her since to thank her for it.”

Nyong’o first discovered “Shake It Off,” the first single from Swift’s 2014 album 1989in the middle of filming war of stars.

“I had a lot of self-doubt because it was the second one I’d done. I got a little bit depressed,” the actress said Thursday. “My best friend came to London (where I was filming) and Taylor had just released ‘Shake It Off’ and he played it for me to cheer me up. We just jumped on my bed and danced and danced and it lifted my spirits.”

At the end Little monsters character was able to sing an acoustic cover of the song in the film.

Almost a year before Nyong’o’s appearance on “Hot Ones,” she saw Swift, now 34, live on her Epoch Tour.

“If a friend of mine (it’s me. Hi.) was maybe getting ready to go to the Taylor Swift festival, Epoch Tour this August, what advice would you give her?” Nyong’o said in an Instagram video in August 2023, referencing the lyrics of Swift’s “Anti-Hero” by LP midnight“I mean, she’s seeing the lights, the clothes, the whole thing for the first time. And she’s on her own, kids.”

On the recommendation of a fan, Nyong’o showed up at Swift’s Los Angeles show in a pink blazer and matching miniskirt with glittery eyeshadow. Nyong’o – who was accompanied by A-list celebs – Brie Larson And Sarah Paulson in Casamigos’ box – also brought friendship bracelets to exchange with other concertgoers. (Swifties often make homemade jewelry to give to other attendees based on the lyrics of “You’re On Your Own, Kid”).
