Dungeons & Dragons 2: Chris Pine is confident there could be a sequel despite box office problems

In the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons, where brave adventurers embark on daring missions, actor Chris Pine holds on to hope. Pine is known for his role in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. He played the role of the clever Edgin Darvis. The film thrilled audiences but was not a box office success.

Despite this, Chris Pine still hopes for a sequel. Let’s take a closer look at why Pine believes this and what the possibilities are for a sequel.

Chris Pine’s optimism for a sequel

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves tells the story of a band of unlikely heroes. The heroes embark on a daring raid to recover an ancient treasure, only to face the wrath of an ancient cult. Recently, Chris shared at the ACE Superhero Comic Cone that he believes there could still be a sequel. He shared that he believes Hasbro, which owns the rights to the franchise, still sees potential in it.

Pine said, “Yeah, absolutely. That’s insider knowledge, too. The movie did well, but not well enough. That was the breakthrough in our business. For these movies to do well, you have to make a billion, and that’s a lot.” He also claimed that there’s a very good chance they can do another one. The odds are good, and if Hasbro can find a financial way to make it work, they can pull it off.

The cash problems

Although the film is based on a popular game and has a well-known cast, its box office success was not as good as expected. Fans and critics liked the film very much. It received high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes – 91% from critics and 93% from audiences. Despite this, its box office success was not as good as expected.

The film grossed around $208 million worldwide against a budget of around $150 million. Yes, those numbers aren’t terrible, but they’re not enough to warrant a sequel.

Challenges for the continuation

Although neither Paramount nor Hasbro have officially announced a sequel, they have not ruled it out either. One of the main obstacles to a sequel is the budget. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has mentioned that they need to find a way to reduce the costs of a sequel. Producing a high-quality fantasy film like Dungeons & Dragons requires significant funds. In addition, a high budget is very important to retain an all-star cast.

Interestingly, a related project – a live-action series for Paramount+ – was recently canceled. The series was supposed to tie in with the film, but is now undergoing creative revamps. This change could impact future Dungeons & Dragons projects, including the potential sequel.

The star-studded cast and crew of Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released on March 31, 2023. Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the film also featured an all-star cast including Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Grant, and more.

Chris Pine is not the only one interested in returning, other actors are also interested in reprising their roles. Sophia Lillis, who played Doric, has expressed her willingness to return for a sequel. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein could also be on board, according to reports.
