Manager of Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock comments on cause of death

The manager of Shifty Shellshock, the lead singer of the band Crazy Town, has announced the singer’s cause of death.

Shellshock, whose real name is Seth Binzer, was found dead in his Los Angeles home on June 24, according to the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office.

A medical examiner in Los Angeles pronounced him dead; the cause of death was not given at this time.

Now, however, his manager Howie Hubberman confirmed that his death was due to an accidental drug overdose.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Hubberman said Binzer died from a “combination of prescription drugs and street-bought drugs.”

He further explained to the outlet: “After his battle with addiction and the rapid success of Crazy Town, Seth Binzer was never able to tackle his addiction on a more successful level with Butterfly.

“We all tried, but in the end we all failed, otherwise Shifty would still be here.”

He continued to pay tribute to the singer, saying: “Shifty was a friend and was very keen to get himself fixed – unfortunately no one, including me, had the right tools to do it.”

The Los Angeles County Coroner has not yet released a cause of death pending toxicology reports.

The singer has long spoken openly about his experiences with drug abuse.

Binzer had previously posted about his journey on his Instagram page, writing: “I’m more of a lover than a fighter…but the one I need to love more instead of fighting with is myself…Mr. shady true love #Sober, Alive and Grateful.”

And fans have paid tribute to Binzer in posts and comments on social media.

One fan wrote: “RIP Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town. There’s no denying that Butterfly was an absolute blast.”

A second posted: “Looks like Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town died last night. Sad. My condolences to his family.”

A third fan commented: “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Shifty Shellshock from Crazytown. butterfly is, without irony, one of my absolute favorite songs.”

Binzer co-founded the band Crazy Town in 1999 after he and fellow frontman Bret Mazur met a few years earlier.

The star has had repeated run-ins with the law throughout his life, including in 2012 when he was sentenced to three years probation.

The verdict came after Binzer was convicted of crack cocaine possession and domestic violence.

In an apology following the incident, he told TMZ: “I want to sincerely apologize to those involved… I am very sorry to those I offended and to those who endured this situation.”
