Drake shines in the new songs “Hot Uptown” and “UUUGLY” by Camila Cabello

Drake has always been good at summer singles. The rapper has a playlist full of tropical hits, so it was only natural that he would reach into that bag again after the Kendrick Lamar battle. He appears twice on Camila Cabello’s new album, C, XOXOand manages to deliver classic Drake performances on both. “Hot Uptown” is the highly acclaimed duet between Drizzy and Cabello, while “UUUGLY” is an interlude that the former has all to himself. These songs are reminiscent of Drake eras that fans will no doubt be happy to hear again. Let’s start with “Hot Uptown.”

Cabello has been teasing this collaboration for months, and it lives up to the hype. The pop singer starts the song, but Drake quickly turns it into a duet, with overlapping vocals and a bouncy, back-and-forth rhythm. For comparison in the 6 God catalog, think of “Too Good” with Rihanna or “Get It Together” with Jorja Smith. It may not be quite on the level of those popular songs, but it’s cut from the same cloth. “UUUGLY” is a different story. Camila Cabello lets Drake have an interlude of his own, and he makes it count. The production is busier and the mood darker. It feels like night to “Hot Uptown’s day.” It’s also right in the sweet spot of Honestly, forget it. Fans of the polarizing album will have a lot to enjoy here. Cabello contributes some background vocals, but it’s the Drake show.
