Group demonstrates for Israel, rejects negotiations with Hamas • Michigan Advance

A group of about 25 people gathered on the steps of the Michigan Capitol on Thursday to show their support for Israel amid the ongoing Gaza war.

Tamara Poberesky described Michigan for Israel, which sponsored the event, as a group of immigrants from the former Soviet Union who organized in support of Israel, and later told the Advance payment that the group also had local supporters, both Jewish and non-Jewish.

Speakers expressed concern about increasing anti-Semitism in the United States and spoke out against demonstrations in American cities and on university campuses.

The Anti-Defamation League, an anti-hate organization that supports Israel, reported that it had 361% more anti-Semitic incidents between the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and January 7, 2024. These incidents included physical attacks, vandalism, verbal or written harassment, and rallies containing anti-Semitic rhetoric, expressions of support for terrorism against Israel, or opposition to Zionism, belief in the self-determination and statehood of the Jewish people in Israel.

However, there are pro-Palestinian organizations such as Jewish Voice for Peace have pushed back against groups that define anti-Zionism as anti-Semitic, arguing that criticism of the Zionist movement and Israeli policies is no different from criticism of any other ideology or policy of any other nation-state.

Since the surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 1,189 people died in Israel, most of whom were civilians, more than 37,000 people were killed and at least 86,429 people injured in Gaza as a result of Israeli retaliation. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip.

At the event, Victor Fey of West Bloomfield encouraged Jews to unite against hate and protect their safety within the law.

“We can debate whether Israel is overly nationalistic, overly conservative, overly militaristic or overly religious. But one thing is not up for debate: When Jews are united, we can withstand virtually anything,” Fey said.

He called on participants to vote for politicians and parties that are committed to supporting Jewish people and to put all other issues aside.

Other speakers criticized the Biden administration for its aid to Gaza, its attempts to negotiate with Hamas for the release of hostages, and argued that the Biden administration was reluctant to supply weapons to Israel.

“We urge you to call your district representatives and demand immediate action to stop negotiations with Hamas, cut humanitarian aid and supplies to Gaza, and provide Israel with consistent and sufficient military aid in a joint effort to destroy a common enemy and bring peace to the entire region and the entire world,” Poberesky said.

The Biden administration has previously denied claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that it had withheld weapons and ammunition. The government noted that only a single shipment of bombs had been held back, according to a BBC report.

According to a report by Axios, the shipment, which was stopped by the government due to concerns about the Israeli invasion of Rafah, will remain paused from Wednesday.
