USMNT player Timothy Weah receives red card after hitting Panama player in the head

USMNT player Timothy Weah receives red card after hitting Panama player in the head

The United States will play the remainder of their second Copa América group match against Panama with just ten men after Timothy Weah was sent off with a red card early in the first half.

Weah received a direct red card after apparently hitting a Panamanian player on the back of the head while off the ball.

Weah initially received a yellow card for the incident, but it was wiped away after the VAR review and the red card came out of the referee’s pocket.

Weah did not look at the referee when he saw the red card, but simply left the field in frustration and took off his shirt.

Weah’s red card is already the third in this Copa América.

USMNT confident of better than 2-0 in first win at Copa America 2024

The USA will be down a man for the rest of the game, although they didn’t seem to mind at first.

Falorin Balogun scored for Panama despite having a numerical advantage. Antonee Robinson picked up a pass in the opposing defense and after a one-two, Balogun shot the ball with his left foot at the right post, slammed it into the metal and scored to make it 1-0.

However, Panama struck back immediately when Cesar Blackman scored the first international goal of his career.

Blackman’s shot looked to be blocked by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, but he saw the ball back at his feet. He dribbled around the US defenders and made a perfect save, as Turner was no longer able to reach the pike.

The first half ended 1-1, although a goal by the United States national team was disallowed because the video referee showed U.S. defender Tim Ream narrowly offside after a Christian Pulisic free kick. Weston McKennie scored the goal, but Ream interfered with play and the goal was disallowed.

As things stand, a draw would mean the United States would leave Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with one point following their three-point win over Bolivia in their opening match.
