Shaq, Nas and Jay-Z join forces for the retro hit “No Love Lost”

Shaq is a pop culture icon. He’s a Hall of Fame basketball player, a colorful personality, and a staple in commercials. But he’s not a great rapper. Shaq’s celebrity status allowed him to release several albums in the 1990s. Some of the songs are passable due to production or guest verses, but it was clear that Shaq was not a wordsmith. Still, it’s fascinating to hear the athlete go back in the time machine and produce a collaboration of this magnitude. “No Love Lost” was originally recorded in 1996, meaning fellow artists Nas and Jay-Z were at the peak of their creativity.

Boy, it shows. “No Love Lost” has a solid instrumental. Nothing that blows you away, but it leaves plenty of room for the rappers to do their thing. Shaq starts and takes the chorus. All in all, it’s pretty good. It has a few duds, but he had the common sense to get out of the way and let the masters do the work. Nas rocked every track he was on in the mid-90s, and “No Love Lost” is no exception. His flow is impeccable and his wordplay razor sharp. He walks away with the best verse, which is saying a lot considering Reasonable doubtHe is followed by Jay-Z from the era. Hov is great, even if he still has the Jaz-O influence, which he would minimize from his second album onwards. Old school hip hop fans will simply love this.

Nas steals this classic from Shaq and Jay-Z (!)

Fo’ sho’, now it’s all about money
The river, you have to pay a little more now
It’s platinum, today we put the gold away
We’ve upped the ante, you’ll never want a showdown again
