LONGi calls for collaborative efforts along the value chain for sustainable renewable energies at the Davos Summer Festival 2024

LONGi calls for collaborative efforts along the value chain for sustainable renewable energies at the Davos Summer Festival 2024

The 15th Annual Meeting of New Champions, also known as Summer Davos, was held in Dalian, China. Premier Li Qiang attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Xie Tian, General Manager of LONGi’s Strategic Management Center, was invited to attend and share insights at the closed meetings “Promoting the Decarbonization of the Asian Value Chain” and “Scenario Planning: Redesigning Value Chains for 2040”.

The theme of this year’s forum, “Next Frontiers for Growth,” brought together over 1,600 senior leaders from politics, business, society and international organizations, as well as distinguished entrepreneurs, innovators and experts. Asia continues to account for two-thirds of global economic growth, and the leaders gathered here will find ways to work together to promote and sustain economic momentum.

One of the most notable achievements of COP28 last year was the target to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. As renewable energy production and installation grows rapidly, the environmental footprint of renewable energy companies’ value chains and accelerated emissions reductions are becoming increasingly important. Sustainable development goals and technological advances are the main drivers for redesigning the value chain structure and function.

At the meeting, Xie Tian emphasized that as a leading global solar technology company, LONGi recognizes its responsibility to reduce emissions. Since 2020, LONGi has joined the RE100, EP100, EV100 and Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), gradually establishing a greenhouse gas emissions accounting system for the entire value chain. The company has set emission reduction targets that are consistent with industry trends and its operational status. Last year, LONGi obtained SBTi certification, becoming the first Chinese photovoltaic company to receive official target verification from the initiative.

Building a green and low-carbon value chain

LONGi focuses on technological cooperation and innovation, builds a collaborative innovation operating system across the entire value chain, and promotes high-quality development within the industry. As early as 2021, LONGi launched a carbon reduction initiative with its suppliers and has continued to advance and deepen these efforts every year, gradually increasing the requirements and standards. The company is empowering its upstream suppliers, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, thereby fulfilling its responsibility as an industry leader.

LONGi systematically integrates carbon reduction targets and promotes green and low-carbon measures along the entire value chain, starting from its own SBTi targets and realizing green, low-carbon products, thereby gradually building a sustainable procurement system.

Climate change poses increasingly obvious risks to ecosystems and people’s livelihoods. While progress has been made in the transition to renewable energy, more concrete actions and close cooperation are still needed to meet the climate goals of countries around the world. Xie Tian believes that renewable energy companies building their own green, zero-carbon and sustainable value chains will also be crucial to achieving sustainable climate impact.

Digital transformation and intelligent manufacturing

In December last year, LONGi’s Jiaxing manufacturing base was awarded as the world’s first “lighthouse factory” in the PV industry, highlighting LONGi’s achievements in intelligent manufacturing and digitalization and setting a global benchmark for advanced manufacturing. Through multiple intelligent technologies, the factory has reduced unit manufacturing costs by 28%, reduced yield loss by 43%, shortened production delivery cycles by 84%, and reduced unit energy consumption by 20% within one year.

On 23 Mayrd This year, LONGi officially launched the “Lighthouse Project”, which aims to extend the agile manufacturing model of the Jiaxing Lighthouse Factory to more production sites, improve comprehensive production capabilities, and set a digital and intelligent benchmark for the PV industry.

Tackling global challenges with sustainable solutions

As a world-leading solar technology company, LONGi is committed to advocating and promoting sustainable development in the field of clean energy. Through continuous technological research and innovation, the company aims to improve the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells, reduce the levelized cost of solar energy, and support the global goals of energy transition and carbon neutrality. Since 2012, LONGi has achieved cumulative shipments of photovoltaic silicon wafers exceeding 414.24 GW. By the end of 2023, a cumulative power generation of over 17.361 billion kWh of green electricity will be achieved, equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions by 812 million tons worldwide.

Under the guiding principle of dual carbon goals, carbon-free power represented by photovoltaics is receiving unprecedented attention worldwide. Combating climate change, promoting green transformation, fulfilling social responsibilities, advocating energy justice, and enhancing biodiversity protection have become an international consensus. These efforts continue to drive photovoltaic practitioners worldwide to contribute to building a clean and beautiful world. LONGi has integrated environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles and standards into its corporate strategy, and will continue to deepen research and improve ESG practices to contribute to the standardization of ESG work in China and globally.
