Three-time Padma award winner and veteran classical singer Prabha Atre dies of heart attack

Three-time Padma awardee and renowned classical singer Prabha Atre died of a heart attack on Saturday. The 92-year-old veteran singer was scheduled to attend a concert in Mumbai the same day.

After suffering a heart attack, the singer was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where she died before reaching the hospital as her health condition had deteriorated.

“Her departure from the world is very painful. Indian music will always be indebted to her. I offer my heartfelt tributes to her and may God grant her family the strength to bear this loss,” said Devendra Fadnavis, expressing his sadness over her death.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also expressed his grief and said, “Prabha ji’s death marked the end of a glorious era of classical music. Her death is a great loss to the country’s music and arts sector and it is a tribute to her.”

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra expressed his grief over her death and directed the administration to perform the last rites to the singer with full state honours.

Her relatives are currently abroad. After her return to the country, she will be given the last rites in Pune on Tuesday.

About veteran classical singer Prabha Atre

Prabha Atre was born on September 13, 1932 in Pune. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in the year 2022 and recently she was honoured with the Atal Sanskriti Award by the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis on December 25. Previously, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2022.

Atre started singing classical songs at a very young age. She briefly worked as a singing stage actress early in her career. She also played roles in a number of Marathi theatre classics including Sangeet Nataks like Sanshay-Kallol, Maanaapamaan, Saubhadra and Vidyaharan.

She is also known for her contribution in popularizing Indian classical vocal music at the global level. She also had a head start in various genres of music like Khyal, Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Geet, Natyasangeet, etc.
