Hear Tom Morello and his son rage in their new song “Soldier in the Army of Love”

Tom Morello has just previewed his next solo album with a new riff-packed single called “Soldier In the Army of Love.” What’s more, it’s the first time the Rage Against the Machine hero has upstaged his 13-year-old son Roman with a guest guitar solo.

The song appeared in Tom Morello’s live set earlier this month when he played at the Download Festival in England. Around the same time, Morello explained in an interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine that the groove feel of the song actually came from his son, who, as he learned during the COVID lockdowns, was following the family business and cooking up crazy sounds on a six-string.

“One day I was walking by his bedroom and he was playing these great drop-D heavy riffs,” Morello said. “I was like, ‘What is that?’ And he was like, ‘I just made it up.’ So we made this song. He wrote the riffs. I produced it and kind of played on it. But the guitar solo is also his.”

Hailed as a “generational anthem” by the elder Morello, “Soldier in the Army of Love” definitely leans into classic, syncopated, RATM-esque, drop-tune riff rock, but also has a bit of a southern, ’70s freedom rock flavor when you get to the vocal harmonies in the chorus. As for Roman’s solo, the younger Morello has inherited much of his father’s dramatic gift.

You can watch the new studio version of “Soldier in the Army of Love” above and a live performance in the download below.

Full details on Tom Morello’s next album have yet to be announced, including whether Roman will appear elsewhere on it. The as-yet-untitled project will be Morello’s first full-length album since his collaboration-rich The underground flood in the Atlas Publication from 2021.
