Richmond’s UNKNWN Football Club completes first annual summer season

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — UNKNWN Football Club The first annual summer season comes to an end this weekend and 8News spoke to the team’s founder and co-captain to find out more.

UNKNWN Football Club is a semi-professional women’s football league heard UKNWN Athletea Richmond-based, women- and minority-owned company specializing in the training of players at the pre-college, college, pre-pro and professional levels.


8News spoke with UNKNWN Founder and CEO Lauryn Hutchinson and UNKNWN Football Club Co-Captain Savannah Taylor to learn more about the team.

Hutchinson said the UNKNWN Football Club was formed because of the team’s players.

“My kids grew up and looked at me and said, ‘So what are we going to do next?’ And I said, ‘Okay, we’re going semi-pro. We’re going pro.’ And I had to fill a need for our players. We had to play games because practice just wasn’t enough,” Hutchinson said.

Taylor described the team’s dynamic as a wide range of players with different experience levels.

“We have some girls who are 14 and some who are 28, 29,” Taylor said. “So we really all have to work together to teach each other and grow.”

The UNKNWN Football Club had a difficult start to the season with three defeats, but after three recent wins the team is on the up.

“It was tough right now, starting with three losses and then getting three wins, but it was great to grow together. That was the biggest thing,” Hutchinson said.

The team will conclude its first annual summer season this weekend with two final games scheduled for Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. against the Washington Dutch Lions at the Bon Secours Training Facility and Saturday, June 22 at 5 p.m. against Arlington Soccer at the Hummel Bowl.
