Terror star Ciarán Hinds has a famous daughter and wife

Ciarán Hinds is a TV heavyweight who has starred in series such as Game of Thrones, Rome and The Terror, but his latest role found him in raunchy scenes alongside his real-life wife!

Not only did he terrify us as gangster Eamon Cunningham in Kin, but he can also lend his voice to cute kid characters. For proof, listen to the character Pabbie in Frozen.

Speaking of Kin, fans shouldn’t expect any good news from Ciarán about a third season… Here’s everything you need to know about Ciarán Hinds, his famous wife, the daughter who followed in her parents’ footsteps, and the reason he’s currently turning down more roles.

Who in the cast of The Terror plays John Franklin?

Ciarán Hinds plays the role of John Franklin in The Terror. The series originally aired on BBC Two in the UK during lockdown, but is now streaming on ITVX (from Thursday 20 June 2024).

The supernatural, semi-historical horror anthology series was inspired by a true tragedy – the true story of an ill-fated Arctic expedition.

In the first of ten episodes, the crew of a 19th-century Royal Navy expedition are sent on a dangerous mission to find the Arctic’s treacherous Northwest Passage. After trouble at sea, the crew members are forced to spend a long winter trapped in the ice.

As the story goes, one of the teams accidentally shot an Inuit because they thought he was a polar bear. But when they rushed to help him, they made a terrible discovery…

A word of advice to readers: don’t get too attached to the cast of The Terror (which includes Matthew McNulty, Paul Ready, Ian Hart and Jared Harris). The characters aren’t destined to live long…

What is Ciarán Hinds famous for? What films has he starred in?

Ciarán Hinds has been on our screens for almost five decades, since his first appearance in the 1977 series Golden Venom, but he is perhaps best known for his role as Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones.

Although he only appeared in five episodes, from 2013 to 2015, he definitely left his mark on the series.

His other major television roles include Gaius Julius Caesar in the series “Rome”, DCI James Langton in “Above Suspicion” and Michael Maguire in “Shetland”.

In 2021, Ciarán played Eamon Cunningham in Season 1 of Kin, the story of a fictional Dublin family caught up in a gang war. And a year later, in 2022, he did something completely different.

Ciarán currently plays Tom Sheridan in the comedy The Dry, about a woman trying to stay sober after years of debauchery. In the series, Ciarán Hinds even starred alongside his own wife (see below for more information).

The Belfast-born actor is also famous for his role as Aberforth Dumbledore in the 2011 film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Ciarán often plays villainous roles in feature films such as The Assassination of a Woman, Road to Perdition, Munich and There Will Be Blood. He has also appeared in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Justice League and First Man and is the voice of Pabbie in Frozen!

Actor has “made the decision to work less”

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Ciarán admitted that he had turned down jobs because he decided to perform less as an actor.

He said: “I’ve decided to work less. Every time I’m booked for a job, I have to convince myself that I have the ability to do it – I don’t have any innate confidence. And the older I get, the more doubts I have. My brain doesn’t work as fast as it used to and I’m not as capable of learning new things. I don’t want to say yes and then be unsuited to it. You have to be honest with yourself.”

Will there be a third season of Kin?

Although Ciarán Hinds only appeared in the first season of Kin in 2021 (we won’t reveal why), that doesn’t stop people from asking him about a possible third season.

Season 2 aired on BBC in 2023 and had one of the most shocking TV endings ever. But so far nothing is known about a second season.

Despite the show’s huge success, rumors persist that Kin may not return for a third season because the lead actors are in high demand.

Sinan Sicimoglu, who played the pawnbroker in the second season, told the Irish Sun: “This is the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts to appear in ‘Kin’ in 2020, but now it’s 2024 and those contracts have expired.”

Who is Ciarán Hinds’ wife?

Ciarán Hinds is married to Vietnamese-born actress and designer Hélène Patarot. They met in 1987 when they both appeared in Peter Brooks’ production of the Mahabharata. More than 30 years later, the couple lives in both Paris and London.

The actor recently admitted how shocked he was when his wife landed a raunchy role – as his mistress in The Dry! It was the first time the pair had acted together since they first met.

In the scenes, Ciarán and Hélène are caught having sex in an alleyway. And even though they are married in real life, an intimacy coordinator was brought in to make sure they were both comfortable doing the scene!

Speaking to the Irish Sun, Ciaran said: “The producers contacted their agent without consulting me, which was very professional. It was fun because Hélène and I haven’t worked together since we first met 40 years ago when we were doing theatre.”

He added: “To be honest, the filming lasted about two minutes and it was no big deal. My dear wife could hardly bear the scene because she was laughing so much.

“We had an intimacy coordinator. I asked her for some instructions which were helpful and then we decided to go ahead with the shoot – it shows two people behind a container and then they run out confused.”

He also revealed that the intimacy coordinator also worked with his daughter…

How old is Ciarán Hinds? Where is he from?

Ciarán Hinds was born on February 9, 1953 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

He is currently 71 years old.

The actor was one of five children and the only son of his father Gerry, a doctor, and his mother Moya, a teacher and amateur actress. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Speaking to The Guardian: “At home there were some concerns about me becoming an actor, so I studied law at Queen’s University Belfast. One of my tutors was someone I had acted with in a school production of Macbeth years before. He realised I had no interest in law at all and suggested I study drama. I got a scholarship and went to RADA, and my parents supported me.”
