New voice actor for ReFantazio after abuse allegations

Toru Furuya was recast in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of Atlus’ latest projects and is scheduled to be released on October 11, 2024. The game is being developed by several industry veterans, perhaps best known for their work on the persona Franchise. Katsura Hashino, Director of persona Series of Persona3 To Persona5founded Studio Zero in 2016 and develops for Metaphor: ReFantazio, then titled Project Re:Fantasy, was announced in December.

Atlus has suggested Metaphor: ReFantazio will be a step in a different direction compared to the persona games. Metaphor: ReFantazioDirector, main artist and composer are Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima and Shoji Meguro. Their work has shaped the current appearance of the persona franchise, but interviews and press suggest a darker, more mature tone for Metaphor: ReFantazio. However, one big similarity of the game is that you can build bonds with other characters and party members.

The archetypes of the upcoming Atlus RPG “Metaphor: ReFantazio” act as the game’s job system and over 40 of these roles are said to be available.

Atlus has announced that Toru Furuya will no longer play characters in Metaphor: ReFantazio. This news follows the recent development that Furuya had a nearly five-year affair with one of his fans that resulted in physical violence. In May, Furuya confessed his guilt on social media, apologized to the woman he harmed, and stated that he would spend the rest of his life atone for his mistakes. In addition, Furuya apologized for tarnishing the image of the characters he portrayed. He has since deleted his social media account. Updates for newly cast characters in Metaphor: ReFantazio are expected to be announced in July.

Fans have expressed their disappointment over Furuya’s actions. The 70-year-old actor has over 50 years of experience as a voice actor and has previously played iconic characters such as Yamcha in the Dragon Ball Series, Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moonand anime adaptations of Mario. Toru Furuya has also stepped down from roles in One piece And Detective Conan after this news, but any plans to recast these characters are still unknown.
