Michigan State Football signs DL Derrick Simmons from the state

Derrick Simmons, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman from Frankenmuth, is the sixth Michigan native to commit to the Spartans’ next recruiting class.

Simmons, a top-10 high school prospect in Michigan, announced his decision on social media Thursday night, writing that he was “blessed” to have the opportunity to take his talent to East Lansing. He also thanked his coaches, family and friends for their support during the recruiting process.

Simmons took an official visit to Michigan State earlier this month. Several other universities, including Big Ten rivals Northwestern, Illinois and Purdue, had interest in him. Ultimately, the three-star prospect decided to stay close to home.

Simmons has been a starter in varsity football since his freshman year at Frankenmuth High School. He was an all-state offensive lineman and all-conference defensive lineman as a junior last season. After football season ends, Simmons will focus on track and field, where he competes in the shot put and discus.

Simmons’ decision came after Macomb native offensive tackle Justin Bell and three-star defensive lineman Cal Thrush announced their commitment to be future Spartans.

With Simmons’ news, Michigan State University’s 2025 recruiting class – the first to be led entirely by Jonathan Smith and his team – grows to 14 inductees.
