Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell sings “Impossible Dream” as LGBT club supports Governor Kathy Hochul’s re-election

Governor Kathy Hochul’s “impossible dream” of being re-elected for another term may have become easier.

At an event in Manhattan on Wednesday evening, the governor secured the support of a well-known LGBT political club – and shortly after the announcement, Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell belted out a rousing rendition of “The Impossible Dream” from the 1965 musical “Man of La Mancha.”

The effusive recognition and support of Hochul by gay rights activist Allen Roskoff at the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club’s annual fundraiser was the surprise of the evening, said attendees of the event at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square.

This happened before Hochul had even said whether she would run again in 2026.

One attendee said support within the LGBT community certainly increases Hochul’s chances of running again as the Democratic nominee in the Democratic-leaning state. She won re-election in 2022 by just 5 points over Republican Lee Zeldin in a closely contested and closer-than-expected race.

Roskoff confirmed on Thursday that he is on Hochul’s side.

“I support her,” Roskoff told the Post. “The club has to vote. But I’m positive about supporting her re-election.”

Roskoff said award winner Hochul has consistently advocated in support of the LGBT community, abortion rights and housing affordability.

A longtime advocate of criminal justice reform, he praised Hochul for pardoning more prisoners than her predecessors.

“I think she was a very good governor,” he said.

Actor Robert De Niro also spoke, saying it was important to re-elect President Biden and reject former President Donald Trump’s comeback attempt.

“We think we are the saviors of New York, but we are not,” De Niro said.

“If Trump comes back to power, he’ll come after you – all of us. The only way to stop him is to re-elect Joe Biden. It’s that simple.”

The event, moderated by City Councilor Erik Bottcher, also honored 96-year-old cabaret singer and actress Marilyn Maye and writers Michael Musto and Mickey Boardman.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton also took part.
