WestJet Airlines cancels more flights ahead of impending strike

Canadian airline WestJet Airlines has begun canceling flights again after a union representing the airline’s maintenance technicians rejected a new salary offer and issued a second strike notice, the airline said on Wednesday.

WestJet said the measure is expected to result in 25 flight cancellations from June 27 to 28, affecting over 3,300 travelers. The airline had previously stated the same day that the work stoppage could occur as early as June 28.

It is unclear how long the strike might last.

WestJet, which is funded by Onex Corp and competes with Air Canada, is facing demands from employees for better working conditions and higher salaries.

WestJet said it had presented the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) with a “Canadian industry-leading collective agreement” that was better than the previous agreement, which the union had rejected earlier that day.

The rejected offer would have offered aircraft maintenance technicians a 22% salary increase over four years.

AMFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“It is particularly devastating that the strike notice we received from AMFA is forcing us to cancel flights and park aircraft – for the second time in just over a week,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Chief Operating Officer of the Group.

The Calgary-based airline, which also flies to destinations across the U.S., canceled 40 flights last week, affecting 6,500 customers, after receiving a 72-hour strike notice from the union. The union withdrew the strike notice on June 20 and agreed to resume negotiations.
