Before Kevin Costner’s highly anticipated film “Horizon” hits theaters this weekend, the actor and director has released a photo book that delves even deeper into the themes of the Western epic – and it’s already a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon.

In The Great Horizon, photographer Cale Glendening offers a deeper look at the characters in Costern’s new film, using classic western photography with beautiful black and white and color images. To create the book’s content, Glendening photographed each member of the cast between takes on set, creating portraits that provide an intimate look into life in such a harsh western landscape.

The big horizon

The extensive collection also includes location footage to complete the vision of Horizon, and includes more than 250 spectacular, never-before-seen images, essays and reflections from the cast and crew on filming, script excerpts, and a foreword by Costner himself.

The blood-soaked film, a two-part look at the expansion of the American West, is told from the perspective of the ranchers, farmers and soldiers who build a future in the region, as well as the Native Americans who first lived there. It’s a deeply personal project for Costner, who put much of his own wealth into the $100 million-plus film, including the mortgage on his ranch. He directs and stars in the film, which he also produced and co-wrote.

Costner screened the first part of Horizon last month at Cannes, and the film hits U.S. theaters on Friday, June 28. The second part hits theaters on August 16.

In the meantime, check out Costner’s hardcover copy of “The Great Horizon” on Amazon for $57.79. Feeling inspired by the Western motifs in Costner’s work? Here’s our roundup of “Yellowstone”-inspired Western clothing.
