Sale of Kansas City Country Club Plaza completed on Friday

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – The Country Club Plaza is expected to have new owners by Friday evening, and there will be a welcoming event in Kansas City on Monday.

A Plaza spokesperson confirmed that the acquisition is expected to close on Friday, June 28.

The Plaza District Council President also said she had expected the closing with Ray Washburne and Stephen Summers to take place on Friday.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced an event for Monday morning at 10 a.m. to welcome the Plaza’s new owners to the city.

The area includes 15 blocks of shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

Kate Marshall, president and founder of the Plaza District Council, said the area is more than five times the size of Highland Park Village in Dallas, an entertainment district also owned by Wahsburne and Summers.

“Prospective buyers Ray Washburne and Stephen Summers are aware of the challenges they face due to deferred maintenance, the state of retail and other social and cultural factors that have challenged the area. The buyers remain optimistic and excited about what lies ahead and without a doubt their ownership represents an extremely lucrative opportunity for this popular area,” Marshall wrote on plazakc.org.

The Plaza District Council hopes the area will grow and prosper under new ownership, the article said.

“Our goal is to serve as an agent of progress in the Plaza District to promote growth, vitality and inclusion. The PDC is working to make the Plaza District the most walkable, safe and connected place in the Heartland. We are focused on connectivity between the mall and the neighborhoods and institutional facilities to the east and west,” Marshall said.

The Plaza District Council hopes to create a mixed-income, mixed-use neighborhood that will provide a variety of options and opportunities for anyone who wants to visit or live in the neighborhood.
