Chris Pine gives promising update on Dungeons & Dragons 2

Summary

  • Chris Pine believes a Dungeons & Dragons sequel is possible because Hasbro believes in the franchise.
  • Dungeons & Dragons 2 could be released on a smaller budget, as Paramount CEO Brian Robbins mentioned.
  • A live-action D&D series for Paramount+ has been canceled, but could be revived after a creative overhaul.

Chris Pine still believes in a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could happen in the future. Based on the cult role-playing game of the same name, which Dungeons The film followed four unlikely adventurers who plan a heist to recover an ancient relic and unleash the wrath of an ancient cult on their town. The film was a hit with fans of the game, but failed to make much of an impression at the box office, leading many fans to believe there would never be a sequel. To date, no second film has been officially announced by Paramount.

But Chris Pine (who plays Edgin Darvis, a thief who leads the group) still has hope, recently telling an audience at ACE Superhero Comic Con (via PopVerse) that a sequel is still possible. When asked if there could be a sequel, Pine’s answer was surprisingly optimistic. Not only does the actor want it to happen, he’s pretty sure it will happen. Despite the film’s mediocre box office returns, Chris Pine believes Hasbro (who own the rights to the intellectual property) still believes in the franchise’s potential. Pine said:

“Yeah, absolutely. Again, this is insider knowledge. The movie did well, but not well enough. That was the crux of our business. For these movies to do well, you have to make a billion, and that’s a lot. I think there’s a really good chance we’ll do another one, because I think Hasbro owns the rights to it. I think there’s a good chance, and if they can find a financial way to make it work, I think they will.”

Although the film is based on an incredibly popular IP (which has seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years) and features an all-star cast (including Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophie Lillis, Bradley Cooper and Hugh Grant), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was not a big success at the box office. The film grossed around $208 million internationally, against a budget of around $150 million.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 needs a smaller budget

As already mentioned, neither Paramount nor Hasbro has officially announced Dungeons & Dragons 2 in development. However, that doesn’t mean either company is ruling out the idea entirely. Speaking to Variety in July 2023, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins said that Dungeons & Dragons 2 is a possibility, but the filmmakers have to solve one glaring problem… the budget. Robbins simply said:

We have to find a way to make it cheaper.
