Richard Gadd doesn’t want TV, he wants HBO. The man who wrote and starred in the Netflix hit Baby reindeer will leave the broadcaster and move into more prestigious waters. He will create, write and produce his next series with support from HBO and BBC. “Ordering an HBO box set with The Sopranos, The cableor Oz and watching it from beginning to end was one of the happiest moments of my childhood,” Gadd said in a press release announcing the news on June 27. “Since then, it has always been my dream to work with HBO and be part of their legendary slate of shows.”

Lions (working title) is about estranged brothers Niall and Ruben, whose reunion at the former’s wedding turns to violence. Forty years of the duo’s fraught history will provide the plot for the series, covering “the ups and downs of the brothers’ relationship, from when they met as teenagers to when they fell out as adults — with all the good, bad, horrible, funny, angry and challenging moments along the way,” the logline reads. “It will capture the wild energy of a changing city — even a changing world — and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?” It seems Gadd’s new series is as much a relationship study as it is a treatise on masculinity, which isn’t surprising given the emotional vulnerability involved, for better or for worse. reindeer. We’ll see how HBO handles this.
