Palestinian-American teenager dies after drowning in Lake Michigan

Mohamad Hassan, a 17-year-old Palestinian American, was found dead last night after drowning in Lake Michigan off Bender Park in Oak Creek, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Hassan was swimming with his family at Bender Park Beach when a rip current swept him and two other teenagers, including his brother, under the water. Hassan’s brother, Abdulrahman, was hospitalized in critical condition but is now awake and able to communicate, said Othman Atta, director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee.

A third teenager was not injured.

All three teens were swimming in “fairly shallow” water about 100 feet from shore, according to the coroner’s report. The sheriff’s office said the 911 call came in just before 8:30 p.m. from the park at 4503 E. Ryan Road, and the Oak Creek Fire Department said rescue efforts were hampered by “high waves and difficult water conditions.” Hassan was pronounced dead just after 10 p.m.

He leaves behind his parents Musaitif Hassan and Jumanah Hamed, his brothers Najeh, Abdulrahman and Yusuf, and his three sisters, the Islamic Society announced on Thursday. The family originally comes from Betein, a city in the occupied West Bank.

The Islamic Society will hold a Janazah, a Muslim funeral, following the prayer service at 1:15 p.m. today at 4707 S. 13th Street. A burial will follow the funeral at Arlington Cemetery at 4141 S. 27th Street. A condolence gathering will be held this evening following the evening prayer at 8:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, Lake Michigan was a moderate swimming hazard last night. Waves were about two feet high in the afternoon and reached three feet in the evening. According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, there have been 10 drownings in Lake Michigan this year through June 19.
