Chris Jones talks to Andy Reid about rest days in the Chiefs’ training camp

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is not seeking a new contract this offseason, so there is no reason to believe he will be missing when the team reports for training camp this summer.

Jones, however, would like to take something from last year’s experience. Jones did not participate in training camp last summer and said he has spoken with head coach Andy Reid about limiting his participation in training camp to limit the stress on his body as he enters his ninth NFL season.

“Listen, man, I have already talked to Andy: “Let me skip training camp. I’m a little older, right?” Jones said about Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star“I feel it. I feel it when we have a day in training camp. Then give me two days off and one day off and maybe we can work something out, you know?”

Jones sat out the first game of the regular season before returning for the 2023 season on a reworked contract. Jones recorded 10.5 sacks on his way to an All-Pro nomination and his second consecutive Super Bowl title, so the time off didn’t seem to have hurt his availability and didn’t deter the Chiefs from signing him to a long-term deal earlier this year.

While that history suggests the Chiefs wouldn’t be averse to limiting Jones’ playing time, Jones said Reid “just looked at him” in his reaction, so we’ll have to wait a while to see how the team will handle the matter.
