“The Bear” stars a famous chef who has never cooked on the show

With the third season of The Bear currently streaming, some fans have just learned that one of the best characters is played by a famous chef who actually exists — and he has never cooked anything on the show.

Matty Matheson’s Neil Fak has been a driving force in the cast of The Bear since season one, always there to fix a flickering light, rewire a blown fuse or offer a helping hand wherever he’s needed.

At the end of the second and the beginning of the third season, he even becomes a waiter and offers his nervous charm to the restaurant’s guests.

The problem is that, although he has been in the kitchen many times, he has never cooked a dish. Why is that funny? Well, for those who don’t know, Matheson is a celebrated chef and internet celebrity who owns several restaurants, has also written two books and has appeared in several web series.

He has also been an executive producer of The Bear since the show’s inception. The fact that he never cooks anything on the show is part of the joke, but some viewers have only now caught on to that.

“I think it’s crazy that they put Matty Matheson, a famous chef who has written two cookbooks, in ‘The Bear’ and didn’t let him prepare food on screen once,” one user tweeted, sparking a wave of reactions.

“This blows my mind every day and I can’t wait to get his new cookbook in October,” one replied. “Oh this makes SO much sense now lol I was wondering why he was making all these videos but he’s a chef so it makes sense,” another wrote.

“I don’t know what’s funnier: that people are just finding out that Fak is a famous chef in real life; that people think *EP* Matty Matheson had no say in this; or that people don’t understand that it’s funnier and better this way,” added a third.

In a 2023 interview with Variety, Matheson admitted that acting scared the hell out of him and he still finds it “nerve-wracking.”

In addition to his starring role, he (along with the show’s culinary producer, Courtney Storer) uses his expertise to bring authenticity to the show’s menus.

“The way I think about food and the way Coco thinks about food are very different. But it’s always the same structure,” Matheson explained.

“When we think of a pasta dish, we ask ourselves, ‘Where does this pasta dish come from? Where am I from? What flavors could I take and put into a pasta?’ That’s what we’re trying to figure out for Sydney and Carmy.”
