Michigan State Football is expected to play in the Quick Lane Bowl

Michigan State enters the 2024 season with almost an entirely new coaching staff. Many believe the Spartans will be one of the worst teams in the Big Ten next season, as their win prediction is 4.5 according to sportsbooks like FanDuel.

It is important for new head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff to rebuild a culture of winning football in East Lansing.

Nick Kosko of On3 predicts that Michigan State will be in the Quick Lane Bowl and play Northern Illinois during bowl season.

Last season, Michigan State finished with a record of 4-8 and hasn’t finished above .500 since the 2021 season, when it won the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. It will be difficult to make the Spartans a winning team again, but if anyone can do it, it’s Smith.

Many Michigan State players have entered the transfer portal this season — 38, to be exact. Thirty-eight players is a lot for any team, especially one looking to regroup. However, Smith brought in the 12th-ranked transfer class according to 247Sports, along with a decent freshman class led by four-star Nick Marsh.

With new quarterback Aidan Chiles, a second-year player for the Spartans, and the other players Smith and his team have signed, it’s hard for fans not to be excited about the future of Spartan football. Marsh should be a standout freshman for Michigan State, as he can be in the starting lineup during the season. Chiles also has another familiar teammate, junior tight end Jack Velling, who is considered a top tight end prospect in next year’s NFL Draft.

Chiles will also have a good running game with running back Nate Carter, who managed nearly 800 yards on 175 attempts.

Still, Michigan State will experience some growing pains as the season progresses. This isn’t Madden, where you can control everyone on the team. It will take time for everyone to get used to each other on the court. There will be mistakes on offense and defense.

The 4.5 over/under total win percentage is there for a reason, as Michigan State has to prove itself under its new regime. However, with a little luck and if everyone plays well, the Spartans can definitely be a team that can play in a bowl game next season.
