Take Control HIV launches biographical interview series

YORK, Pennsylvania, June 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Take Control HIV today proudly announced the launch of a new portrait series titled “Living Positively: Inspiring Stories.” This series highlights the humbling and unique life stories of six people living with HIV, the community-shaping activism they have accomplished, and how they have overcome a number of obstacles along the way.

To this day, stigma and discrimination remain a problem in the HIV community. From misconceptions about transmission to outdated beliefs, HIV survivors often face prejudice and judgement. This campaign shines a light on the resilience of people who have bravely stepped into the spotlight, not only improving healthcare and their communities, but also directly challenging socioeconomic barriers.

“Each activist comes from a diverse background and brings their own story. Their journeys span urban, suburban and rural areas of the United States, and their stories of survival demonstrate that people can face similar challenges no matter where they come from or where they are going,” said Sarah Carvajal, MSW, spokesperson for Take Control HIV.

The Take Control HIV series highlights inspiring stories of prominent activists, including:

  • Derrick Cox “Strawberry“” – Activist working with health clinics in the country’s capital.
  • Maria Mejia – native of Colombia, living with HIV for over 30 years and founder of one of the world’s largest international HIV self-help groups.
  • Guy Anthony – Sexual assault survivor who built a community, wrote a book, and started a small business.
  • Patrick Ingram – Public health professional who combats discrimination and provides support in rural areas.
  • Ciarra “Ci Ci” Covin – Mother with HIV who breastfed and gave birth to two HIV-negative children.
  • Kim Canada – A dandelion (born with HIV) and teacher who has overcome obstacles and is now pursuing a master’s degree.

We are excited for readers to immerse themselves in these stories and hope they find these biographical stories as inspiring as we do.
