Chris Martin has spoken out about the time when Coldplay almost missed their first ever performance at Glastonbury.

Talking about the band’s latest BBC documentary, Coldplay: Our Glastonbury, the ‘Fix You’ and Singer of “Viva La Vida” explained how the band first Glastonbury experience It was 1999 and the group had arrived with all their equipment so as not to miss their performance at the New Bands Tent.

“The urge to go there was so strong,” Martin said on the show. “At our first performance we probably carried a not very good amp with a drunk tour manager who obviously didn’t know what he was doing either.”

“So we looked around the whole place very quickly and then started where you should start, which was the New Bands Tent, first. I don’t think I even thought about how wild it was. It was like we were here and it was too late and it’s huge.”

But after their perhaps somewhat hasty first appearance, Coldplay returned to the famous Pyramid Stage in 2002, 2005, 2011 and most recently in 2016, reflecting the huge success of the “Sky Full of Stars” artists.

Coldplay will headline Glastonbury again in 2024, before the release of their next album, Moon Musicthis October.

This new album could be one of their last, with Chris Martin hinting that the band may not make new music after 2025. “So, I know, I can tell you: Our last real record will come out in 2025 and after that, I think we’ll just be touring,” Martin revealed in 2021.

“Maybe we’ll do some things together, but then the Coldplay catalog will be over, so to speak.”

The tenth first single from the album“feelslikeimfallinginlove”, was released on Friday, June 21st, giving fans plenty of time to get to know the first track of the Moon Music era before hitting the Pyramid Stage this weekend.

The new song has all the hallmarks of a Coldplay classic, with its powerful chorus in which Martin confesses: “It feels like I’m falling in love / Maybe for the first time / Baby, you blow my mind / It feels like I’m falling in love / You throw me a life preserver / This is for a lifetime / I know.”

Coldplay fans in Budapest were the first to hear the song live at the Puskás Aréna last week, and the reaction was nothing short of euphoric. People were excited to see if the band could play more new music at Glastonbury.

Coldplay: Our Glastonbury is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.

Moon Music will be released on October 4, 2024.
