Do you like American music? Paper Citizens likes all kinds of music, but she likes American music the most. If you are a fan of the classic American indie rock band Violent women or just a listener of alternative rock radio, then you know what we are talking about. And it underlines the point that Paper Citizen is making with their new single “American song.”

This is her very personal tribute to the music she grew up with and which she considers part of the glue that holds her country together. Paper Citizen is the indie rock outlet of the singer-songwriter Claire Gohst. She loves sharing her passion for rock and roll music with her listeners. The Singapore-born artist wants to share with you what she appreciates about her life and childhood in the United States.

The music video for “American Song” is a nice little snapshot of everyday American life. It shows her and her band playing the song in their garage. It also shows friends just having fun together, putting their worries aside and enjoying each other’s company. Gohst says of the song itself:

“‘American Song’ is my ode/homage to my love and appreciation for American music and my nostalgia for how much live music has changed in the last decade. Despite all the things we disagree about in this country, I think we can agree that America has some of the best music in the world.”

As a recording project, Paper Citizen is intended to be traditional rock with a wide range of appeal. It is not fixated on classifications or categorisations. It is a fun brand of rock that is meant to be entertaining and inspiring. If anything can be considered inspirational, it is Gohst’s backstory of how she ended up where she is now. Originally from Singapore, she was kicked out of home at 17 when her family found out she was a lesbian. Fortunately, she had built up some notoriety locally as a live performer. She realised that to really “make it” she would have to move to America. So she did, settling in Boston and then studying music at the The Berklee College of Music.

It’s been a wild road to get here, but Gohst has overcome the adversity and is now ready to thank music for getting her to where she is today.
