In addition to the Great Lakes that make up Michigan’s iconic shape, there are nearly 11,000 inland lakes in the state, many of which are 1,000 acres or more in size. While the Great Lakes get a lot of attention, there is one inland lake that is deeper than a Great Lake and as clear as the Caribbean Sea.

According to World Atlas, Torch Lake averages 111 feet and has a maximum depth of 285 feet. This makes it deeper than Lake Erie, which averages 62 feet and has a maximum depth of 210 feet.

Torch Lake, also known as the “Caribbean of the North,” is a popular summer destination known for its incredibly clear turquoise waters, white sand, and two-mile-long sandbar at its southern end.

Not only does Torch Lake boast swimming in Michigan’s deepest and clearest lake, but it also offers numerous activities including canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, paddle and fishing, ski boating, and jet skiing. Torch Lake in Antrim County deserves a spot on your Michigan summer bucket list and is sure to become a summer tradition.
