Warning: Junior doctors in Sussex begin strike today

Strikes by junior doctors have been underway since today.

People across the country have been urged to use NHS services with caution to help the health service cope with demand during the strike, which is due to end at 7am on Tuesday.

Until then, non-urgent hospital treatments and appointments can be postponed. However, patients will be informed of this.

If patients do not hear anything, they should attend their appointments as usual.

The British NHS also warned that health services could be busier than usual due to the warm weather and the European Championships.

An NHS Sussex spokesman said: “Please help us help you by using the services wisely.”

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust said it was working hard to ensure it had sufficient staff available during this time.

A spokesperson for the foundation said: “We only postpone appointments and treatments when necessary and, where possible, book new appointments immediately.

“Regardless of any strike action, it is really important that patients who need urgent medical attention continue to come forward as usual, particularly in emergencies and in serious, life-threatening cases when someone is seriously ill or injured or their life is in danger.”
